Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody – Movie Review

Whitney Houston’s life is celebrated in I Wanna Dance With Somebody.

Naomi Ackie as Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody is a celebration of the incomparable Whitney Houston. It is from director Kasi Lemmons and stars Naomie Ackie and Stanley Tucci. The film features the original recordings of 22 Houston classics and remixed them for the state-of-the-art sound of movie theaters.

From New Jersey choir girl to one of the best-selling and most awarded recording artists of all time, audiences are taken on an inspirational, poignant, and so emotional journey through Houston’s trailblazing life and career.

I Wanna Dance With Somebody takes fans of Whitney Houston on an emotional journey. This overdue biopic chronicles the life of arguably the most extraordinary voice in history. From being discovered to becoming a megastar, Houston’s short and tragic life is finally made for the big screen. BAFTA-winning actress Naomi Ackie tackles the difficult task of embodying Houston. The British actress works overtime to nail down the voice and mannerisms of the icon. Despite not being a doppelganger, Ackie delivers a respectful performance.

The fabulous supporting cast features Stanley Tucci, Tamara Tunie, Clarke Peters, Nafessa Williams, and Ashton Sanders. Tucci, who plays Houston’s manager Clive Davis played an integral role in the careers of many massive music stars. As a result, he was one of the primary sources for the film’s storytelling. The film also involved Gary and Pat Houston, Whitney’s brother and sister-in-law, which allowed the film to tell the story authentically.

This film tackles several unknown insights into Houston’s life and work. Even though the film is a celebration, it tells the whole story, the good, the bad, and the ugly. No punches are pulled as the demons she faces are front and center. The film is beautiful, moving, powerful, and highly emotional as it shows the full Whitney. The cinematic treatment focused on integral performances throughout her career, which were magical.

I give Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody 3.5 out of 5 stars. It is a very human tribute to a fantastic talent that still, to this day, no one likes her. Relive the icon’s life and music, watch this movie in theaters starting December 23rd and do not forget the tissues. Read more Reviews on Nerdtropolis and Subscribe to our YouTube.
