Top Gun: Maverick is the best legacy sequel to date.

The original Top Gun made its debut in 1986. It followed the hotshot fighter pilot Maverick played by Tom Cruise, who is sent to Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School. It is where the best of the best train to refine their elite flying skills. However, Maverick’s reckless attitude and cocky demeanor put him at odds with the other pilots. He butts heads with Val Kilmer’s Iceman as they compete to be the top fighter pilot.
Top Gun: Maverick Synopsis
After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs. He is pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.”
Despite multiple delays Top Gun: Maverick is finally hitting theaters on May 27th. Watching it on IMAX was an exhilarating thrill ride. However, this legacy sequel does lean strongly onto the original as it replicates scenes and the soundtrack. This movie makes you ask, why have we not gotten a Top Gun movie with multiple sequels by now? Again, Tom Cruise proves that his Blockbuster powers are not diminishing. The supporting cast may not be very memorable, but Miles Tellers’ casting as Goose’s Son was a great choice. We also get the return of Val Kilmer as Ice Man, which will make you grin and shed a tear.

In addition, the nostalgia is strong with this sequel, and moviegoers who grew up with the original will have a blast. This film looks as realistic as possible due to the practical effects utilized over CGI. Top Gun: Maverick builds up to an awe-inspiring final act filled with intense dog fights and immersive action fit for the IMAX screen. If you are looking for an entertaining blockbuster to watch in theaters, this is the film.
Verdict
I give Top Gun: Maverick 4 out of 5 stars. It is a film that all ages can enjoy and as I have mentioned above, watch it in IMAX. Top Gun: Maverick will be in theaters on May 27th.
