Synopsis
When creative outsider Katie Mitchell is accepted into the film school of her dreams and is eager to leave home and find “her people.” Her nature-loving dad insists on having the whole family drive her to school and bond during one last totally-not-awkward-or-forced road trip. But just when the trip can’t get any worse, the family suddenly finds itself in the middle of the robot uprising! It’s up to the Mitchells, including upbeat mom Linda, quirky little brother Aaron, their squishy pug, Monchi, and two friendly but simple-minded robots, to save humanity.
I really enjoyed The Mitchells vs The Machines. This sharp and self-aware film is absolutely fantastic from the get go. It starts off really strong and keeps getting better. It is a heart-warming film about family and the effects technology has on our daily lives. Packed full of emotion and clever humor, The Mitchells are a family you will relate to. The unique animation is colorful and visually pleasing. This animation-comedy is a love letter to creating your own identity, finding individuals you relate to, and having a family that is not “normal”. It is packed with plenty of laughs and action to keep you entertained. This film draws inspiration from TRON, TERMINATOR and I,ROBOT. I will not be surprised if The Mitchells vs The Machines becomes the best animated film of 2021.
Verdict
I give The Mitchells vs The Machines a 9 out of 10. Sitting at just under two hours, you will not want it to end. It is a movie that the whole family will enjoy together. I could easily see a movie franchise featuring more adventures from the Mitchells!
