The Marvels – Movie Review

The Marvels is a blast thanks to an unbeatable trio and tons of furry flerken fun.

The Marvels, the latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is a refreshing change of pace. It offers a steady-paced adventure with a runtime of just 1 hour and 45 minutes. This film manages to accomplish as much as some of its lengthier predecessors. The film introduces a cohesive and engaging plot that sets the stage for forming a Marvelous trio. The reason behind this alliance makes complete sense within the narrative, and the chemistry between the three leads—Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani—is undeniable. However, Vellani truly shines, bringing a genuine sense of heart to the MCU, and her portrayal of Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, is always a treat.

Samuel L. Jackson’s return as Nick Fury, along with Goose, adds an extra layer of fun for fans of the franchise. Their presence in the film provides a delightful connection to the larger MCU. Directed by Nia DaCosta and produced by Kevin Feige, “The Marvels” also features Zawe Ashton, Gary Lewis, Seo-Jun Park, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, and Saagar Shaikh.

In the story, Carol Danvers has reclaimed her identity.

She seeks revenge on the tyrannical Kree, inadvertently destabilizing the universe. Her journey leads her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, which results in her powers becoming entangled with Kamala Khan and Carol’s estranged niece, Monica Rambeau, now an astronaut. This unlikely trio must learn to work together to save the universe as “The Marvels.” The film also introduces an intriguing villain named Dar-Benn, who harbors legitimate reasons for his loathing of Captain Marvel. The conflict he brings to the story adds depth and raises the stakes for our heroes. Continuing the Kree and Skrull storyline, “The Marvels” hints at the events of “Secret Invasion,” implying that it takes place prior to the film. This expansion of the larger Marvel narrative keeps fans engaged and eager to see how it all connects.

“The Marvels” is a visually stunning movie that offers a treat for the eyes.

The sharp CGI and impressive effects are impressive, although, at times, the CGI can be questionable. However, the action sequences are vibrant and create a memorable cinematic experience that immerses the audience in the Marvel universe, especially in IMAX. When the trio fights together, it’s truly a sight to behold. Each “Marvelous” hero gets to showcase their powers and full potential, making the movie a thrilling experience.

Verdict

I give “The Marvels” 4 out of 5 stars. It is a thrilling addition to the MCU that brings humor, heart, and a compelling storyline, all within a compact runtime. With its remarkable trio, impressive visuals, and tantalizing connections to the broader Marvel universe, it’s a must-see for fans and newcomers alike. Don’t miss this cosmic adventure when it hits theaters on November 10th, and you should stick around for the mid-credit scene. It offers a satisfying and eXciting tease of things to come in the MCU.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
