Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a blend of pulse-pounding action, heartfelt moments, and huge laughs that will undoubtedly bring MCU fans back to theaters. It will be in theaters on September 3rd 2021. This movie stars Simu Liu, Tony Leung, Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu and Ronny Chieng.

Synopsis

Shang-Chi is a young Super Hero whose journey of self-discovery unfolds in this never-before-seen origin story. Shang-Chi must confront the past even though he thought he left it behind when drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.

There is no question that Shang-Chi is not a well-known character like Iron Man or Captain America. However, Marvel still decided to give him his own movie. This grants the storytellers the freedom to tell a martial arts fantasy story on their own terms. This movie is filled with great cameos. It also has unforgettable twists and turns that will give the MCU Phase 4 a big push in the right direction.

Shang-Chi works hard to establish characters you can care about and put them in dangerous situations that inform the story and make them stronger. Simu Liu does a great job bringing to life a lead character that is tough yet vulnerable. He’s joined by Awkwafina as his long-time friend whose superpower seems to be never fully knowing what’s going on. The banter between the two of them will have audiences rolling.

Tony Leung portrays Shang-Chi’s father, a sinister yet conflicted powerful with the title of the Mandarin. Of course, we have heard that name in the MCU before, but there is no doubt that we get authentic Mandarin, leader of the Ten Rings.

One of the most remarkable things this movie achieves is going from such low stakes at the beginning to wild, world-threatening dangers in the final act. In addition, the fight choreography is stellar. It has a blend of real-world fighting technics and impeccable CG. This is genuinely like a Jackie Chan movie meets Dragon Ball Z! Despite being predictable at times and drag once in a while, Marvel fans will be satisfied.

Verdict

I give Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten rings an 8.5 out of 10. Do not forget to stick around for the mid-credits and post-credits scenes that strengthen Shang-Chi’s connection to the greater MCU!
