SCREAM (2022) – Movie Review

SCREAM will be in theaters January 14th.

Scream is the iconic slasher franchise that became a pop culture phenomenon because of the direction of Wes Craven and the young and upcoming heartthrobs that starred in it. After 4 films that seemed to have gotten worse each time, a 5th film simply titled SCREAM returns with familiar faces. Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette return to what could be their final franchise appearance.

Scream 2022 Movie Review

Synopsis

Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past.

Scream (2022) is a brilliant and entertaining case study of the franchise itself. The flipped and twisted rehash of the original story honors Wes Craven’s legacy. Despite being the 5th SCREAM film, this movie is a “Requel,” meaning a reboot and a sequel. There is so much creativity in this movie. If you like Horror Easter Eggs, this film is filled with them.

To my surprise, this meta slasher tackles the serious issue of Toxic Fandom.

It was a smart move to bring in Legacy Characters back such as Sydney, Gale, & Dewey to please fans of the franchise. Their appearances were more than just a cameo and offered a lot of value to the plot. Like its predecessors, this film focused on self-referencing and callbacks, which makes this franchise fun. The brutal kills and twists that keep you guessing “Who is behind the mask?” Which make this a worthy sequel that lives up to the 1996 original.

Verdict

I give SCREAM a 4.5 out of 5. The “Requel” will satisfy fans of the original and bring in a whole new generation of Ghostface fanatics.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
