The Old Guard Now Streaming On Netflix
Set in the modern day, but spanning centuries, The Old Guard centers on a group of mercenaries who possess a mysterious inability to die. Academy Award winner Charlize Theron produces and stars as Andy — or Andromache the Scythian — a warrior born in an age that predates almost all historical records whose experience in combat rivals no other. Together with Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts), Joe (Marwan Kenzari), Nicky (Luca Marinelli), and the newest immortal, Nile (KiKi Layne), Andy uses her gift to protect mankind — leading the team on a covert, darkly altruistic path through the ages, balancing harm with good, and taking a life when necessary in order to save thousands of others. Their secret is then exposed when an operation threatens their existence.
It is based on the Image comic series that I am not too familiar with but if you want to read the very first issue, you can do so here.
Netflix’s adaptation of The Old Guard starring Charlize Theron is nothing to get excited about. It would have been best make it into a TV series instead of a feature film with a lesser-known lead. The movie starts off extremely slow and continues to pace at a slow rate despite a handful of action sequences. It was hard to keep my attention due to the excessive dialogue and backstories. It fails to stand out from the dozens of generic mercenary movies that are common these days. If you’re looking for a blood filled movie to pass the time then add this movie to your watch-list.
I give The Old Guard a 5/10 and recommend passing on this 2 hour and 4-hour snore-fest.
