James Earl Jones retires from the role at age 90.

James Earl Jones is retiring after a long career but still wants Darth Vade to live on. Variety reports that Earl Jones has signed over the rights to his voice. The new owners of the iconic voice are LucasFilm and Respeecher. As seen in Obi-Wan, Darth Vader’s voice was done via new AI technology. Respeecher uses archival recordings and a proprietary AI algorithm to create a new dialogue with performers’ voices from the past. Additionally, they worked with Lucasfilm on the voice of young Luke Skywalker for Disney+’s The Book of Boba Fett, Matthew Wood of Lucasfilm told VF that the actor “wished to keep Vader alive.” Earl Jones made his debut as the voice of Darth Vader in 1977’s Star Wars.
