Hocus Pocus Celebrates 30th Anniversry

Hocus Pocus 3 is currently in development.

Thirty years ago on July 16th, 1993, the movie Hocus Pocus hit theaters. The bewitching tale of mischief and mayhem has since become a beloved cult classic, enchanting audiences young and old. As it celebrates its 30th anniversary today, the film’s endless charm and timeless humor continue to captivate fans worldwide.

Hocus Pocus weaves together the perfect blend of comedy, fantasy, and Halloween spirit.

The film takes us on a supernatural journey to Salem, Massachusetts. Three wickedly delightful witches are resurrected by a curious teen named Max Dennison, played by Omri Katz. With the help of his sister Dani (Thora Birch), his crush Allison (Vinessa Shaw), and a talking cat named Binx (voiced by Jason Marsden), Max must stop the witches, the Sanderson Sisters, from attaining immortality and causing chaos on Halloween night.

The Sanderson Sisters, played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, are iconic cinematic villains with great chemistry. Midler’s portrayal of Winifred Sanderson is a masterclass in comedic villainy. Parker brings a mischievous and childlike energy to the role of Sarah Sanderson and Najimy shines as the comically dim-witted Mary Sanderson. Upon its release, Hocus Pocus received a mixed response from critics and a modest box office performance. However, over the years it has become a beloved Halloween tradition, gaining a massive following and achieving cult status. The film’s lasting popularity is due to its blend of humor, fun characters, and a touch of nostalgic magic.

Hocus Pocus presents a world full of imagination and unforgettable moments.

From the witches’ version of “I Put a Spell on You” to the iconic scene of the Sanderson Sisters terrorizing trick-or-treaters, the film is brimming with delightful humor and whimsical charm. The clever script, with its memorable one-liners and clever banter, keeps audiences engaged from start to finish. Even after 30 years, Hocus Pocus still captivates new generations, with its dedicated fan base eagerly awaiting news of a potential sequel. Countless screenings and annual Halloween marathons have cemented the film’s legacy as a testament to the magic of storytelling.

The story of the Sanderson Sisters did not end with this film as Disney+ released a sequel in 2022.
