Grand Theft Auto 6 Announced By Rockstar

Almost a decade after the record-smashing release of Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar Games has finally officially announced that a new entry in the franchise is in development. In a statement posted across social media outlets, Rockstar addressed that “many…have been asking about a new entry”, alluding to vocal fans clamoring for a new original sequel instead of just another port of GTAV.

The Enduring Legacy of Grand Theft Auto V

The blockbuster game originally hit shelves in September 2013 for the Xbox 360 and PS3 to universal acclaim. Earning $800 million in a single day, it remains the fastest-selling entertainment product in history. As of today, it has grossed over $6 billion in worldwide revenue. It has seen remastered releases for both PS4 and Xbox One. Rockstar also plans to release GTAV for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. That means the game will have appeared across 3 console generations.

Recent Controversy

Repeated rereleases have frustrated gamers unsure of why Rockstar has yet to release an original follow-up. This announcement also comes after the lukewarm reception of GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which was released in November of last year. The remastered collection of Grand Theft Auto IIIVice City, and San Andreas aggravated many with its technical and graphical bugs. The Definitive Edition also lost many tracks featured on the in-game radios due to licensing issues.

Additionally, Rockstar Games co-founder, head writer, and executive producer Dan Houser departed the company in February 2020, leading to rumors that impeded the development progress of any new GTA game.

The Fanbase Abuzz

The announcement was met with excitement across social media platforms. Many fans took to responding with celebratory memes and videos. Speculation also continues as to the new game’s setting, era, and release window. It appears despite a long-dormant phase and several setbacks, the anticipation of a new GTA release still ignites the industry.
