Goosebumps (2023) – Series Review

The Goosebumps revival delivers a brand new take on the classic books.

The new Goosebumps series set to premiere on Disney+ and Hulu has exceeded my expectations. As a devout fan of R.L. Stine’s literary works and the original television series, watching the first five episodes of this revival was an exhilarating journey into the eerie and thrilling world of Goosebumps. This series is not a mere retread of the Goosebumps we grew up with. It takes the franchise to a more mature and sophisticated level, making it ideal for a teenage and older audience. The timing for the premiere of his series couldn’t be more perfect, coinciding with Stine’s 80th birthday celebration.

Stine’s globally beloved book series inspires the series, introducing us to five high schoolers who venture into a shadowy and twisted investigation. Their quest is to uncover the mysteries surrounding the tragic death of a teenager named Harold Biddle three decades ago, all while delving into the dark secrets hidden within their parents’ past. This central plotline is captivating, combining elements from various R.L. Stine books into a cohesive and fascinating narrative.

What truly sets this adaptation apart is its unique storytelling approach.

The series seamlessly weaves together multiple Goosebumps stories. It creates a more intricate plot that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats while perfectly balancing the nostalgia of the original series. With a fresh, darker twist, this adaptation will appeal to longtime fans and newcomers. One standout feature of the new Goosebumps series is its diverse cast. They all bring a refreshing and modern sensibility to the show. The young talents and seasoned actors deliver compelling and authentic performances. A significant addition to the cast is the inclusion of horror favorite Justin Long. His presence adds legitimacy to the project, assuring audiences that the creators have taken the franchise to new heights of horror and suspense.

Verdict

I give the new Goosebumps 4 out of 5 stars. The new series is a spine-tingling, nostalgia-inducing experience that will cater to the die-hard Goosebumps fans while expanding its appeal to a wider, older audience. It is also a must-watch for those who crave a darker and more mature take on R.L. Stine’s iconic tales. So mark your calendars and prepare for a journey back into Goosebumps’ chilling and thrilling world on Friday, October 13, 2023, on Disney+ and Hulu.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
