Evil Dead Rise – Movie Review

Evil Dead Rise is the rebirth of the classic horror franchise.

The Evil Dead franchise is getting new life breathed into it. It premiered at the 2023 SXSW festival with a roaring positive reception from the fans. Irish filmmaker Lee Cronin directs this film. It stars Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland as the two leads. This film comes as several other Evil Dead/Army of Darkness projects were scrapped, which is probably for the better so that this film can shine on its own.

A road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A apartment. The sisters’ reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book deep in the bowels of Ellie’s building, giving rise to flesh-possessing demons and thrusting Beth into a primal battle for survival as she is faced with the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable.

This movie is a shocking blood bath. Despite seeing the original films, I did not expect this film to push the limits. None of this is to be taken negatively. For this genre, this film revisits what made the original movie so great. A movie made over 40 years ago and is now a pop culture phenomenon. I can see why Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell signed off on this film by becoming producers. This film is a return to form for the franchise that unleashed the Book of the Dead.

It is brilliant how this film is put together and the apparent world-building it is already laying out. However, at the same time, it pays tribute to the original horror classic that made groovy a catchphrase. Cronin does not hold back on pushing the boundaries. There are genuine scares and horror; putting a close family at the center of the unexpected mayhem unfolding is pure genius. Finally, if you are looking for gore, demons, carnage, and a hell of a good time, then this movie is for you.

I give Evil Dead Rise 4 out of 5 stars. It is one of the most extreme horror films I have ever seen. So if you have a weak stomach, fair warning. However, the original movie’s fans will be pleased with this modern-day installment. Read more Reviews on Nerdtropolis and Subscribe to our YouTube.
