Dragon Ball Super – Chapter 88 Recap

Dragon Ball Super Manga finally returns Following a four-month hiatus.

Dragon Ball Super Chapter 88 Recap

Trunks and Goten take center stage in the return of the Dragon Ball Super Manga. The story skips ahead several years after Goku and Vegeta’s humiliating defeat at the hands of Black Frieza. Their sons have become crime-fighting vigilantes known as Saiyaman X-1 (Trunks) and X-2 (Goten). This chapter also sees Dr. Hedo’s manga debut and appearances by several supporting cast members, both old and new. This new arc takes place a few months before last summer’s Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie. Trunks and Goten are now teenagers, juggling school and their new heroic secret identities. It’s heartwarming that the boys have taken up the Saiyaman mantle after all these years.

In addition to superhero antics, this chapter is full of slice-of-life high school scenes reminiscent of the Great Saiyaman Saga. Trunks attends Blue Hal High School with classmates Kompas and Roulah. It’s worth noting that Black characters in this new arc are drawn typically and not as offensive caricatures. This is a positive step forward for the series since Dragon Ball has a long history of these stereotypes.

This chapter primarily focuses on Trunks.

Hopefully, we’ll see more of what Goten has been up to and meet some of his other friends. In addition, we see more of Trunks’ budding relationship with Mai, which is a little problematic. Mai may appear young now thanks to a wish to Shenron gone awry, but she is thirty years older than Trunks. The chapter ends with Super Saiyan Trunks defeating Alpha 12 and the Alpha Series Androids. Then, the grave-robbing Dr. Hedo vows to find another way to procure funds for his research.

Verdict

I give Chapter 88 a 3.5 out 5 stars. It’s exciting to have Dragon Ball Super back after all this time. With a hit movie in the rear-view mirror and the manga starting back up, DBS fans will likely get an update on the anime’s return sometime soon.
