The Beetlejuice sequel is officially happening at Warner Bros. Discovery.

Tim Burton will return to helm the sequel to Beetlejuice. The 1988 film starred Michael Keaton as the titular character who is returning. The original film became a cult classic for its macabre humor and quirky characters. The plot follows a recently deceased couple, played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, as they attempt to rid their former home of its new, living inhabitants. Along the way, they enlist the help of Beetlejuice, a bio-exorcist, to scare off the living and regain their home. The film also featured Winona Ryder, who is confirmed to return as Lydia. Joining the sequel is Jenna Ortega, who will play Ryder’s daughter, and Justin Theroux. Production is set to begin tomorrow in the UK and will be released in theaters on September 6, 2024
One of the standout elements of the film was its distinct visual style.
It combined Burton’s signature gothic aesthetic with bright, colorful imagery. This helped to create a unique world that felt both eerie and whimsical. The film also boasted a memorable soundtrack, featuring songs like “Jump in the Line” and “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song),” which helped to elevate the film’s offbeat humor. In 1989, a year after the film’s release, an animated series based on “Beetlejuice” premiered on television. While the show maintained the same general premise as the film, it expanded upon the characters and their world. The animated Beetlejuice, voiced by Stephen Ouimette, was less of a villainous figure and more of a mischievous hero, helping the show’s young protagonists, Lydia, and Charles Deetz, navigate their way through the afterlife.
One of the most notable aspects of the “Beetlejuice” animated series was its imaginative and surreal visuals. The show used its animated format to create outlandish creatures and environments that would have been impossible to recreate in live-action. It also maintained the film’s offbeat humor, with jokes and puns that often went over the heads of younger viewers. The film and the animated series have endured as beloved examples of Burton’s unique style and humor. They showcase the enduring appeal of Burton’s eccentric vision and the power of good, spooky fun.
