Barbarian is a genuinely unexpected horror film.

From 20th Century Studios and New Regency comes the terrifying thriller, Barbarian. It is now in theaters and is by Zach Cregger, who makes his feature-film directing and screenwriting debut. The film stars Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård, and Justin Long.
Synopsis
Traveling to Detroit for a job interview, a young woman books a rental home. But when she arrives late at night, she discovers that the house is double booked and a strange man is already staying there. Against her better judgment, she decides to spend the evening but soon discovers that there’s a lot more to fear than just an unexpected house guest.
Barbarian was a pleasant surprise. I went in without watching the trailer and knowing anything about it. This horror film is very original and will be a blast for fans of the genre. It reminded me of early 2000 films such as House Of Wax, House Of A 1,000 Corpses, Dead End, and The Hills Have Eyes. I am not a huge horror fan, but I enjoyed every aspect of the Barbarian. It mixed with dread and tension with injected comedy to deliver a great moviegoing experience. Plenty of disturbing situations will keep you on the edge of your seat. You can see Cregger’s deep love of horror with many of the genre tropes used. Justin Long’s return to horror was overdue. Long initially got his start with “Jeepers Creepers” and “Galaxy Quest.” His role as the rental property manager in Barbarian was ideal for him as he got to step back into his natural, charming, likable personality.
Barbarian will become an instant cult classic.
Additionally, Bill Skarsgård, who has an impressive resume, delivers a performance we have never seen from him before. His character is soft and sweet but is also nervous and off-putting. Previously he played the iconic and terrorizing clown Pennywise in the Stephen King adaptation IT. He brought everything he had to this role as one of the occupants of the rental property.
Verdict
I give Barbarian 4 out of 5 stars. It is an eerily fun horror flick with plenty of surprising turns. Even though Halloween is over a month away, this movie will be a great watch to start getting you ready for the spooky season.
