Air Bud Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary

Air Bud had a domestic box-office total of $23,144,499.

Air Bud was released in theaters 25 years ago on August 1st, 1997. The Disney sports comedy film was by director Charles Martin Smith. He is an actor-turned-director who starred in films such as American Graffiti, The Buddy Holly Story, Never Cry Wolf, Starman, The Untouchables, and Deep Impact. Smith also directed Dolphin Tale and its sequel. Kevin Agers starred as Buddy’s new owner. Air Bud star Buddy was nominated for a Blimp Award for the film. Unfortunately, Buddy passed away at almost ten years old due to cancer soon after. Air Bud was his final acting role. He sired nine puppies. The franchise would go on to produce four Air Bud more movies and nine spin-offs.

Synopsis

Buddy, the sensational real-life hoop hound with 22,000 career baskets under his collar, stars in this hilarious and touching movie. When Josh Framm, a 12-year-old boy, finds himself in a new city with no friends, he’s too shy to try out for the basketball team. However, while practicing, he meets Buddy, a runaway golden retriever, who surprises him with his ability to score baskets. Josh and Buddy eventually make the school team, and the dog’s extraordinary talents spark a media frenzy that attracts Buddy’s greedy former owner (Michael Jeter), who wants to cash in on the dog’s notoriety. Boy and dog must keep one step ahead of the brute — while at the same time rallying their school team to the state finals!
