About My Father stars comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.
Comedian Sebastian Maniscalco joins forces with legendary actor Robert De Niro in the new comedy About My Father. The film is loosely based on Maniscalco’s life and relationship with his father. The film also stars Leslie Bibb and Kim Cattrall. It will be in theaters on May 26th, 2023. Check out our interview with the director of the film Laura Terruso below!
Sebastian (Maniscalco) is encouraged by his fiancée (Bibb) to bring his immigrant hairdresser father, Salvo (De Niro), to a weekend get-together with her super-rich and exceedingly eccentric family (Kim Cattrall, Anders Holm, Brett Dier, David Rasche). The weekend develops into what can only be described as a culture clash, leaving Sebastian and Salvo to discover that the great thing about family is everything about family.
This family comedy movie focuses on the father and son’s relationship. There is no denying the chemistry Maniscalco, and De Niro have on screen. The film delivers many laughs mixed with hijinks, but there are also plenty of heartfelt moments. De Niro continues to provide fantastic performances and is such a versatile actor. He is so fun to watch whenever he leans into his comedic side, where you get Meet The Parents Vibes. Maniscalco leans into his own upbringing to deliver a love letter about family. His performance sheds some light on his ability to play the lead, but I would be lying if I did not admit that I loved his performance more in Somewhere in Queens. The supporting cast is amusing, and all have their shining moments, but Cattrall steals the spotlight with her scenes. When you put her and De Niro together, you get magic.
I give About My Father 3.5 out of 5 stars. Despite having a lot of heart and hilarity, I would have preferred this film to lean into Rated- R territory. However, it is still a film you can enjoy with your parents, and I hope this film is the start of a Godfather-esque family comedy trilogy.
